St Gabriel's Catholic Primary School

History at St Gabriel's

Our History curriculum is designed to help children understand how the past has shaped the world they live in today. Through carefully sequenced units, pupils explore significant events, civilisations and individuals, developing a secure sense of chronology and an appreciation of how societies change over time.

What Children Learn

Throughout their time at school, pupils build a broad and rich knowledge of:

  • Key periods in British history, from prehistoric Britain to modern times

  • Ancient civilisations such as Egypt, Greece and Rome

  • Significant individuals who have influenced change

  • Local history and how our community has developed

  • Non‑European societies that provide a wider global perspective

This knowledge is revisited and deepened as pupils move through the year groups, helping them make meaningful connections between different historical periods.

Developing Historical Skills

History is an enquiry‑driven subject, and pupils learn to think critically about the past. They develop skills in:

  • Asking thoughtful, perceptive questions

  • Evaluating a range of historical sources

  • Understanding cause and consequence

  • Identifying similarities, differences and trends over time

  • Considering different interpretations of events

  • Communicating ideas clearly through writing, discussion and presentation

These skills help children understand not only what happened, but why it happened and how we know.
