St Gabriel's Catholic Primary School

Music at St Gabriel's

Music plays an important role in our curriculum, helping children develop creativity, confidence and a lifelong appreciation of the arts. Through singing, performing, listening and composing, pupils explore a wide range of musical styles and traditions, building both practical skills and musical understanding.

What Children Learn

Throughout their time at school, pupils experience a broad and engaging music curriculum. They learn to:

  • Sing with control, expression and accuracy

  • Play tuned and untuned instruments

  • Explore rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and structure

  • Listen carefully to music and describe what they hear

  • Compose and improvise using a variety of musical ideas

  • Understand how music is created, including simple notation

This knowledge is introduced gradually and revisited regularly, helping children make meaningful connections between different musical concepts.

Progression of Skills and Knowledge

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that pupils develop musical skills step by step. As they move through the school, children:

  • Build confidence in singing and performing

  • Develop a secure sense of pulse and rhythm

  • Learn to read and use basic notation

  • Explore more complex musical structures and techniques

  • Refine their listening skills and use musical vocabulary accurately

  • Work collaboratively to create and perform compositions

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils have a strong foundation in both practical musicianship and musical understanding.
