Year 6 - Welcome

Welcome to our year 6 page. Year 6 is an exciting time in the life of any child as they become more independent and get ready to go to secondary school. Throughout the year we try to create opportunities for the children to develop their independence both socially and academically. They will be taught by both year 6 teachers as well as Mrs Brown for art and Mr James for computing.

Our topics are: Hola Mexico, Fallen Fields (World War One), Frozen Kingdom, ID, Blood Heart, Gallery Rebels and A Child’s War (World War Two). More details can be found in the curriculum maps.

There are more opportunities to take responsibilities in school such as school councillors and house captains.

A big focus in year 6 is to help prepare the children to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Our non-Catholic children learn about the sacrament and help their friends to prepare.

We visit Alton Castle every year on a two-day residential retreat. This is part of the Confirmation programme but also increases the children’s independence and helps them develop good, social skills and character traits such as perseverance and resilience as they tackle different challenges in the North Staffordshire countryside.

Of course, SATs are an important focus for us during the school year and the children need to learn and revise new grammar, maths concepts and read daily to help prepare for these tests, which are completed in May.

This is also the year when the children and parents need to apply to secondary school. The applications need to be completed by the end of October and parents are notified of places on March 1st.

After SATs, we focus on Confirmation and lots of projects and creative work. We also work towards a leavers’ assembly, where the children reflect on and celebrate their time at St. Gabriel’s.
