At St Gabriel’s Catholic Primary School, we greatly value the importance of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in providing a secure foundation for children’s future learning and development. Our aim is to ensure that each child has a happy and positive start to their school life in which they can build a foundation for a love of learning. Children learn in a stimulating, nurturing and carefully planned environment through a balance of play, exploration and high‑quality adult interactions. We support the children to develop their independence, resilience, and confidence.
Following the EYFS Statutory Framework, we support children’s development across all seven areas of learning, ensuring they build strong foundations in communication, early reading, early maths, physical development and personal, social and emotional growth.Â
We use ongoing assessment, including the EYFS Profile at the end of Reception, to understand each child’s progress and plan next steps that meet their individual needs. Practitioners observe children in their play, build knowledge of each child and use this to shape a curriculum that is responsive, ambitious and developmentally appropriate.
Our provision has a strong focus on high‑quality interactions, well‑sequenced learning and the development of early language, vocabulary and foundational knowledge. Staff model, scaffold and extend children’s thinking, ensuring that every child is supported to make progress and develop confidence.Â
We create an enabling environment—indoors and outdoors—that encourages independence, curiosity and problem‑solving. Children have opportunities to explore, investigate and rehearse new skills through meaningful play, supported by adults who know when to step in, when to step back and how to move learning forward.
Above all, our EYFS provision is built on strong relationships. We work closely with families, value children’s interests and experiences, and ensure that every child feels safe, happy and ready to learn. Our aim is to give all children the best possible start to their school journey.
