Special Year for Sacramental Preparation
Year 3 is a very special year for many of our baptised children as they prepare to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion. Participation in the Sacramental Programme, led by the Sacred Heart Parish team, will be required for those taking part. Throughout the year, we explore themes of forgiveness, God’s unconditional love and the importance of the Blessed Sacrament with all children through prayer and reflection. This ensures that every child, both Catholic and non‑Catholic, feels included, valued and part of our school community.
Growing Independence and Resilience
Year 3 is an exciting step forward as children begin their journey through Key Stage 2, becoming more independent and reflective in their learning. You’ll notice your child taking on new challenges with growing confidence, and simple routines at home, such as packing their own bag, organising homework or checking what they need for the next day all help strengthen these skills. Gentle encouragement to “have a go” before asking for help supports the resilience and problem‑solving abilities expected in Key Stage 2, helping children feel secure, capable and motivated.
Reading for Understanding and Enjoyment
In Year 3, children move beyond early reading and begin to focus more on comprehension through understanding what they read, discussing ideas and exploring new vocabulary. You can support this by reading together daily, talking about characters and events, and encouraging your child to share their thoughts about a story. Whether they read aloud or you read to them, these conversations help deepen understanding and build a love of books. Please record this is in your child's individual reading diary (and bring them into school every day).
Growing as a Writer
Writing in Year 3 becomes more detailed, structured and imaginative. Children begin to use paragraphs, richer vocabulary and a wider range of punctuation. You can help by giving them real reasons to write such as notes, letters, lists, stories or simple reports about things they enjoy. Praise their ideas and creativity, and gently remind them to use the spelling and grammar skills they learn in school. Short, positive writing opportunities help build confidence.
Building Strong Mathematical Skills
The Year 3 maths curriculum introduces new concepts such as times tables, fractions and formal written methods. You can support this through everyday activities: practising times tables in short bursts, measuring ingredients when cooking, comparing prices in shops or spotting shapes and patterns around the home. Keeping maths practical and playful helps children understand that numbers are part of everyday life.
Talking, Thinking and Exploring
Conversation is one of the most powerful tools for learning. Ask your child about their day, encourage them to explain their thinking and explore their interests together. Whether you’re walking to school, cooking or playing a game, these moments help develop vocabulary, reasoning and curiosity which are all key parts of the National Curriculum.
Keeping Learning Positive
Above all, keep learning relaxed and enjoyable. A few minutes of reading, a quick game or a simple chat about something interesting can make a big difference. Your encouragement and interest help your child feel supported, confident and ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities of Year 3.
