Year 2 How to help your child at home

Building Confidence and Independence

Year 2 is a time when children begin to take more ownership of their learning. You can support this by encouraging small moments of independence at home for example by choosing a book, organising their school things or having a go at solving a problem before asking for help. Celebrating effort rather than perfection helps children feel proud of themselves and more willing to try new challenges.

Nurturing a Love of Reading

Reading regularly makes a huge difference in Year 2. Listen to your child read their school book, but also enjoy stories together for pleasure. Talk about characters, make predictions and explore new vocabulary as you read. These conversations help deepen understanding and build the comprehension skills children need as texts become more complex. We encourage families to read together daily, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Please record this is in your child's individual reading daily (and bring them into school every day).

Supporting Writing in Everyday Moments

In school we follow the I’m a Clever Writer approach (IAACW) to teaching writing. Writing in Year 2 becomes more detailed and confident, with children beginning to work with greater independence. You can help by encouraging writing in meaningful ways, for example writing notes, lists, letters, labels, stories or even simple diaries. Praise their ideas and creativity, and gently support them to use their phonics and spelling knowledge. Short, positive writing opportunities help children see themselves as capable writers.

Making Maths Practical and Playful

Maths in Year 2 builds on early number skills and introduces new ideas such as multiplication, division and simple fractions. You can support this through everyday activities: counting objects, sharing items equally, spotting shapes, comparing lengths or using coins during play. Games, puzzles and practical tasks help children understand maths in a hands‑on, enjoyable way.

Encouraging Talk and Curiosity

Talking with your child is one of the most powerful ways to support learning. Ask them about their day, encourage them to explain their thinking and explore their interests together. Whether you’re cooking, walking to school or playing a game, these conversations help build vocabulary, reasoning and confidence.

Keeping Learning Positive

Above all, keep learning relaxed and enjoyable. A few minutes of reading, a quick game or a simple conversation can make a big difference. Your encouragement, interest and praise help your child feel supported and ready to take on the new challenges Year 2 brings.
