Building Independence
Year 4 is also an important year for developing independence. Children are encouraged to take greater responsibility for organising their belongings, completing homework and preparing for the school day. Supporting these routines at home helps build resilience, confidence and a sense of ownership over their learning, all of which contribute to their success in school.
Maths and Number Fluency
Maths in Year 4 places a strong emphasis on number fluency, particularly multiplication and division. Quick recall of times tables supports many other areas of maths, including fractions and problem‑solving. Practising number facts at home, even for a few minutes each day, helps children become more secure and confident in their understanding.
Multiplication Tables Check
During the summer term, most Year 4 children will take part in the national Multiplication Tables Check. This assessment is designed to see how confidently and quickly pupils can recall all multiplication facts up to 12 Ă— 12, and the aim is for children to confidently recall all of these times tables by the end of Year 4. Regular, short bursts of practice at home make a significant difference to their speed and accuracy. Your child has access to TT Rockstars and Purple Mash, both of which provide engaging and effective ways to rehearse times tables in line with National Curriculum expectations.
Oracy and Vocabulary Development
Oracy continues to be an important focus in Year 4, as children learn to express their ideas clearly, listen carefully to others and take part in thoughtful discussions. Building strong speaking and listening skills supports every area of the curriculum and helps children develop confidence when sharing their thinking. Alongside this, vocabulary development plays a key role in deepening understanding. Children are introduced to a wider range of subject‑specific and ambitious language, and they are encouraged to use new words in their reading, writing and everyday conversations. Talking with your child at home, exploring new vocabulary together and encouraging them to explain their ideas in full sentences all help strengthen these essential skills.
Writing and Spelling
As children progress through Year 4, they begin to use more varied sentence structures, a wider range of punctuation and increasingly complex spelling patterns. You can support this at home by giving your child opportunities to write for different purposes, such as short stories, diary entries or simple notes. These everyday writing experiences help them apply classroom learning in a natural and enjoyable way, building accuracy and confidence.
Reading at Home
Reading continues to play a vital role in Year 4, as children are expected to develop greater stamina and deepen their understanding of a wide range of texts. Encouraging your child to read daily, and taking time to talk together about what they have read, helps strengthen comprehension and broadens vocabulary. Discussing characters, themes or predictions supports the higher‑level reading skills outlined in the National Curriculum.  Please record your child's daily reading in their individual reading diary (and bring them into school every day).
